Here are a few ideas to make a visit to Harcourt Arboretum a special experience for all ages. These activities are for the inspired, curious child in ALL of us.

The Arboretum provides a wonderful and safe place to enjoy and explore, whether on your own or on one of the many organised events. (See Harcourt Events)

The network of easy walking trails around the Arboretum, suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, allows you to explore the meadows, native woodlands and the collection of trees from around the world.

Get Together

Family Days

These free drop-in days are designed to help families and friends explore and share a great day out at this incredible site. (See Harcourt Events)

Themed Picnic

When the weather is good, plan a picnic under the giant trees of the Arboretum. You could make it a themed picnic with only things that come from trees. Apple Juice, fresh fruit, nuts, and olives. Bon Appetite!

Telling Stories

Ancient Trees have many stories to tell. Find your favourite and as a group start making up its story. Tell it in the first person as if you are the tree. Each person take turns in telling one sentence. Let your imaginations go wild. To start your story try “I’ve got a secret to tell.....” or “Most people don’t know this, but.....”

My Favourite Tree

Or you can each tell a story about your favourite tree. Children will love hearing the stories of their parent’s favourite tree when they were young.

Create a Treasure Hunt

Before you arrive sit down and write a list of things to find during your Treasure Hunt at the Arboretum. They can be things to see, hear, smell or collect. Think of a prize or treat for your group if you can get most of the items on the list. A list might include: a red leaf, something round, something spiky, a feather, something that smells nice, a bird calling from a tree, something that has been nibbled by an animal, something that reminds you of yourself, something rough, a rabbit hole, a mole hill, a brown butterfly, a pine cone.

Happy Hunting.

(Please remember not to pick anything from a plant if you are collecting.)
