The Alpine House

This is where we grow plants from mountainous regions of the World. We change the display of plants in this house on a regular basis so that there should always something to be seen in flower. Many of the alpine plants grown in this house take on an almost jewel like quality when their clay pots are plunged in sand. Visit at different times of year to marvel at the beauty of these tiny specimens.

The Fernery

There are over 8,400 species of ferns in the World and the plants in this house show all of the different growth habits of the ferns – from the floating Salvinia in the pond (that is a troublesome weed in some tropical regions of the World) to the epiphytic fern, Platycerium bifurcatum or stag’s horn fern hanging from the roof. From climbing Lygodium japonicum, growing on the back wall of the house, to the majestic tree fern, Dicksonia antarctica, with its hairy stem. This house really does show just how varied the colour green can be.
